What is Perma.cc?

"Perma.cc is a service that helps anyone who needs to cite to the web create links to their references that will never break." About Perma.cc, https://perma.cc/about (last visited July 31, 2024).

"Perma.cc is a tool created by the Harvard Law School Library to avoid 'link rot,' which occurs when a cited URL leads to a webpage that is broken or blank or has since been altered. A Perma.cc permalink is an archived record of the page as it existed when the permalink was created—i.e., at the time of citation." The Supreme Court of Ohio Writing Manual, § 5.8, at 51 (3d ed. 2024), https://www.supremecourt.ohio.gov/docs/ROD/manual3e.pdf.

The latest editions of both the Bluebook (21st ed. 2020) and the Supreme Court of Ohio's Writing Manual (3d ed. 2024) strongly encourage the use of permalinks in citations to online resources. (See The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation r. 18.2.1(d) (Columbia L. Rev. Ass'n et al. eds., 21st ed. 2020); The Supreme Court of Ohio Writing Manual, § 5.8, at 51 (3d ed. 2024)). Perma.cc helps you create those links.

Perma.cc Accounts

Anyone can have a Perma.cc account, which allows the user to create permanent links (or "permalinks") to web pages, by signing up directly with Perma at https://perma.cc/sign-up. However, new users are only able to create ten free links on a trial basis. Once they've used up their ten free links, users who are not affiliated with an academic library or a court must sign up for a paid subscription in order to make additional permalinks.

If an academic library or court has an account with Perma that grants them free, unlimited usage, any users affiliated with that library or court can receive the ability to create an unlimited number of links for free.* Luckily for you, if you are a Capital Law student, faculty member, or administrator, you too can become an affiliated user through the Capital University Law School Library's Perma account.

To request a Capital Law Library-affiliated Perma.cc account, please completely fill out the following request form: Perma.cc Account Request Form.

Individual accounts will cease being affiliated with the Law Library's account upon graduation or separation from the school. When an account is no longer affiliated with an academic library or court, the permalinks previously created will still be active and accessible, but the user will need to purchase their own subscription in order to make additional links.

* Some limitations and restrictions apply. See the Perma Terms of Service for more information. Abuse of the privileges of the account and/or violation of the Perma Terms of Service will result in the termination of the offending account's affiliation with the Capital University Law School Library.

How to Create a Permalink Using Perma.cc

Once you have a Perma.cc account, it is surprisingly easy to create a permalink:

Step 1: Go to https://perma.cc.

Step 2: Log in using your Perma.cc credentials.

Step 3: Copy the URL (or web address) of the page you want to preserve.

Step 4: Enter that URL into the Paste your URL here box.

Step 5: Click the Create Perma Link button.

The Perma.cc software will then visit the page, make a record of it, and create a unique URL that points to the preserved record. If, however, you change you mind about preserving that version of the webpage, a link can be deleted within 24 hours of its creation. After those 24 hours, that unique link becomes a permanent link to a preserved copy of that particular webpage at the time of creation and will be retained by the instutions behind Perma.cc for as long as possible. See the Perma.cc User Guide for additional information.
